Social Media

In English class on Thursday with Rocío and Jose, we turned our focus to something we may all pay too much to – social media. It’s pretty clear that social media plays a big part in our students’ lives. Needless to say, it’s massively important to young people in general.
To get the students talking, we had a quick but in-depth brainstorm. They were to tell us which social media platforms they know of and what they are used for. On the board, Sara wrote the student’s responses in the gerund under each according social media platform.

Once we’d finished our discussion over social media platforms and their uses, we moved onto the next part of our activity, which consisted of watching two videos about the dangers of social media usage among teens.
We appreciated some of our students' responses to the videos. One of them who said that to him, the happiest he ever is, is when he’s out in the countryside working, mentioning that he feels most at peace when he’s away from his phone. We thought this was very refreshing to hear.
The second video we watched showed the dangers of meeting up with strangers online. Ultimately the point being that people can create fake personas to try to meet up with minors in person. This video shocked the students, but they assured us that they would never put themselves in such situations, by only talking to friends online and only meeting people they know in person.
