In class on Thursday with 4th of ESO we touched upon the topic of the Australian Bushfires, which to no surprise, is a topic the students were all well aware of.
We started off the class by showing a short documentary report of the devastating situation in Australia – which included many shocking details and statistics about the disaster.
When we watched the video for a second time, we would pause the video and allowed the students to have more time to look at the facts and excerpts so that they could give us their opinion on what was happening, in English of course! We had the students tell us what the causes/reasons for the bushfires were and the consequences.
The aim of the activity was to talk about the very important and relevant issue that is climate change as we believe it’s vital that young people are aware of what is happening in the world, both good and bad. We asked the students about climate change: if they knew the difference between climate change and global warming; whether they believe in climate change and why; how it is affecting the world we live in and what we can do about it. They seemed to be very interested in the topic and shared interesting opinions and personal insights. It’s fair to say that they would do pretty much anything to save the poor animals affected by this devastation in Australian given the opportunity!
