This week in class our Language Assistant, Sara, talked about Scottish Legends and how people celebrate Halloween in Scotland.
Esta semana Sara, nuestra asistente de conversación, nos habló sobre leyendas escocesas y sobre como celebran el día de Halloween en Escocia.
Selkies
Selkies were mythical creatures that could transform themselves from seal to human form and back again. Some stories tell that Selkies lured islanders into the sea, the people enchanted by these creatures would never return to dry land.
Selkies eran criaturas míticas que podían transformarse de focas a humanos. Las Selkies atraían a isleños hacia el mar que no regresaban nunca más a tierra firme.
Kelpies
The mythical Kelpie is the Scots name given to a supernatural water horse that was said to haunt Scotland’s lochs (lakes) and lonely rivers. The Kelpie would entice people to ride on its back, before taking them down to a grave.
El mítico Kelpie es el nombre escoces que se da a un caballo marino supernatural, que dicen habitaba los lagos escoceses y los ríos aislados. El Kelpie persuadía a la gente para que montase en su lomo y bajarles a una tumba.
Halloween in Scotland
On the day of Halloween Scottish people do something called ‘Guising’ which literally means disguising. It’s like trick-or-treating but instead Guisers MUST perform a song or trick to get treats! Not only that but they do it to ward off any evil…
It was believed that, by disguising one could blend in with any with any wandering spirits and remain safe from harm.
El día de Halloween los escoceses hacen algo denominado “Guising” que literalmente significa disfrazarse. Es parecido al “truco o trato”, pero los “Guisers” (los que se disfrazan) deben cantar una canción o hacer alguna broma para que les den algún dulce o chucherías. Además, consiguen de ese modo mantener a raya a cualquier ser maligno…
La gente pensaba que al disfrazarse podían mezclarse con el resto de los espíritus que deambulaban por la zona y así estar a salvo.
